After nearly 12 years, the UPS Teleservices call center on Blosser and Betteravia roads will be closing its doors. UPS officials said the 260 employees were notified positions would begin to be eliminated starting in July, with the entire facility closing its doors by October.

ā€œWe’re continually looking to evaluate the facilities and resources we have, and had to streamline operations and eliminate some redundancies,ā€ UPS company spokesperson Susan Rosenberg said of the closing. ā€œWe’ve already got some other facilities in that time zone and will be shifting the work to those.ā€

Separation programs have already been presented to employees, Rosenberg said. Packages will be based not just on years of service, but will also include transition services such as career counseling.

ā€œWe’re putting this information out so early to give people a longer lead time so they can look for other opportunities,ā€ Rosenberg added.

The facility, which ranks just outside the top 10 largest employers in Santa Maria, first opened in 1998 as MicroAge Teleservices, and was bought by UPS in 2000. It’s one of 10 UPS call centers nationwide.

Rosenberg said a call center in Salt Lake City is also closing, but its employees will be able to transfer to another facility in the area. No such option exists for the Santa Maria employees, she added.
