Would you like to learn more about the art of weaving a fantastical story? Michael Katz, a renowned storyteller and host of the radio storytelling program Katz Pajamas on KCBX 90.1 FM, is teaching a storytelling class for adults at Santa Barbara City College.
The class, called “Storytelling and You,” will be a two-day workshop at the Wake Center in Goleta on Sept. 29 and 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuition costs $45.
“This class is right for anyone looking to improve or learn storytelling skills: teachers, professionals, parents, actors, public speakers, lawyers, the merely curious … you name it,” Katz said in an e-mail to the Sun. “This workshop will benefit all levels of storytellers. I will teach some basics of storytelling, and then students in the class will present a short piece, receive constructive critique, and learn through observation of other students’ work.”
Class participants should come with a story to tell that is between five and 12 minutes in length.
According to his website, storytellermichael.com, Katz has been a storyteller since 1984 and has been featured at the openings of both the Los Angeles Getty Center and the Disney Concert Hall. He is one of the founding members of the national touring theatre company BOXTALES, and was the founding artistic director for the Flying Leap Storytelling Festival in Solvang.
