The annual shutdown of the coastal branch of the State Water Project has been extended through Nov. 23 for routine repairs and maintenance, meaning Santa Marians will be drinking water from city wells for just a little bit longer.

Ā

ā€œA portion of the canal was inspected, and they found damage to a portion of the floor,ā€ city water resources manager Shannon Sweeney said. ā€œThere were some buckles and cracks.ā€

Ā

Sweeney also said residents might notice a slight difference in the water because of the increased hardness and mineral content in the well water.

Ā

ā€œWhen the water’s harder, it doesn’t suds up as much, and people might notice more spots on their dishes,ā€ she said. ā€œAlso, the water might taste more mineralized because it’s filtered through the ground.ā€

Ā

But the water is still quality drinking water,
she added.
