The Orcutt Union School District School Board approved layoffs for eight classified employees at its April 18 meeting, causing some parents present at the meeting to question district spending.Ā

Layoffs will be issued to six part-time physical education aides and two part-time bus attendants, who assist special needs students travelling to and from school.

In an interview with the Sun, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Jan Yanagisako said classified layoffs are common because district officials never know if they’re going to receive the categorical funds necessary to staff positions each year.

ā€œWe hope we can bring them back, but we don’t find out about the funding sometimes until September when the school year has already started,ā€ Yanagisako said.Ā

She said the district doesn’t expect to issue any more layoffs this year.
