Cachuma Lake’s Neal Taylor Nature Center invites local families to two events featuring local bats, titled Go Batty, on July 23 and 30 at 8 p.m. The event happens at dusk, when the flying mammals come out to feed, and will include a talk by Santa Barbara Natural History Museum biologist Paul Collins.

The Go Batty event welcomes families to learn about Myotis californicus bats, a species of local bat actually considered “micro bats.” The Neal Taylor Nature Center staff erected a bat box—a large box standing on the end of a post, where the bats can roost—a few years ago, and naturalists have counted hundreds of bats leaving the box during dusk hours.

The event will include lots of information about the bats, including their eating habits, how they communicate, social structure, and where they are found. The event is free, but there is a $10 admission fee to the Cachuma Recreational Area County Park per vehicle. More information is available at clnaturecenter.org or 729-2246.
