Sixth-grade students at Miller Elementary School are learning how to mind their manners in a new program called “The ABCs of Etiquette,” which is intended to reinforce what many students have already been taught at home.

The first lesson covered restaurant ordering and dining. School principal Karen Porter talked with students in Trinity Hamilton’s 6th grade class on March 2 about manners. Traci Guggia, whose family owns and operates several local restaurants, was expected to visit the classroom to talk to students about appropriate ordering, tipping, and careers in the restaurant industry. The students then got a chance to exhibit what they learned at The Pantry Restaurant, owned by the Guggias, where they ordered lunch and practiced their dining out skills.

The Miller School PTC and the Guggia family sponsored the luncheon. Other sixth-grade classrooms will participate in the program later in the year. The etiquette lessons are based on the best-selling book about successful students, The Essential 55. Other lessons later in the year will cover how to make proper introductions, how to behave in special locations, and appropriate public cell
phone use.
