Technology lovers listen up! Allan Hancock College is inviting high school juniors, seniors, and incoming college students to participate in a free, four-day workshop called The Mechatronics Institute, to be held July 28 through 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s Lompoc Valley Center.

Institute participants will be immersed in the world of high technology, while learning the basics of electronics, mechanical engineering, and computer programming.

Also, students will get to use the latest in Parallax Boe-Bot technology. Boe-Bots, used mostly in education, are robots controlled by microcomputers that create hands-on, interactive experiences.

The workshop is offered through grants from the National Science Foundation SpaceTEC and the Department of Labor, Employment, and Training Administration WIRED initiatives. It will be led by Allan Hancock College electronics instructor Robert Alldredge, and John Galisky, coordinator of Lompoc High School’s Space, Technology, and Robotic Systems Academy.

Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Although no previous experience or knowledge is required to enroll, completion of algebra with a grade of C or better is highly recommended.

For more information about the program and application forms, contact the college’s Economic Development Office at 922-6966, Ext. 3351.
