The San Luis Obispo County Reading Association will knock its love of literacy up a notch during the third annual school giveaway and silent auction on Oct. 1. Itās a free event that comes complete with appetizers.
Last year, Orcutt Academy K-8 won a $1,000 gift package, which included an author visit, more than $400 worth of books, and a professional development literacy conference for all staffers. Anyone who attends this yearās event gets the chance to vote for a local school to win the same kind of literacy package. The school that receives the most votes during the event wins.
The organization is hosting the silent auction and school giveaway at the Santa Maria Public Library from 4 to 6 p.m. The silent auction portion of the afternoon will raise funds for both the giveaway and other reading-associated community events. Last year some of the funds raised were used to buy more than 100 books to give away during the YMCAās Jump into Summer program.
The reading association serves both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Board member Michael Shaw said the organization has been actively involved in donating books and facilitating professional development to promote literacy on the Central Coast for the last 20 years.
