Know a nonprofit that needs some cash? The city of Santa Maria is now requesting proposals for the use of 2010-2011 Community Development Block Grant Program and HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds for public service activities, capital projects, and affordable housing projects.

The city anticipates receiving approximately $1,256,000 in CDBG funds and $30,000 in program income. Approximately $364,000 in HOME monies will also be available fiscal year 2010-11.

Some of the current beneficiaries of CDBG money include VTC Enterprises, Catholic Charities, Legal Aid Foundation, the Salvation Army, and Santa Maria Valley FISH Meals on Wheels.

All parties who want to apply for funds must complete and submit a CDBG or HOME application form. Application packets may be obtained during regular business hours from the Special Projects Office, City Hall, room 2.

In addition to submitting an application packet, all agencies interested in applying for CDBG and HOME funds are required to attend a mandatory pre-application workshop on Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. in Shepard Hall at the Santa Maria Public Library.

The CDBG Entitlement Program, established in 1974 and administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides metropolitan cities and urban counties with funds to help in achieving their goals of neighborhood revitalization, economic development, improved community facilities, prevention and elimination of slums, and assistance to low and moderate-income people.
