Lompoc’s own mobile library for kids served more than 7,700 bookmobile visitors in 2016, according to a news release from the city of Lompoc.

The bookmobile checked out fewer books than that, with the final count breaching 5,000, but overall the Lompoc Library considered the inaugural year of the Charlotte’s Web Mobile Children’s Library a “huge hit.”

The mobile library began work in March 2016, and its main priority is visiting areas of the community where children are less likely to have access to a physical library, the release said. In 2016, the bookmobile made 139 stops around the Lompoc community, including Spring Fest, Old Town Market, Lompoc Valley Medical Center’s disaster preparedness fair, and the children’s Christmas parade.

“The bookmobile strives to be where children are, providing library services across the Lompoc Valley and reaching children who cannot access a physical library,” the release said.

The mobile library is funded by the Charlotte Benton Trust, which will keep the bookmobile running for the life of the vehicle, according to the release.
