In my opinion, recent voting by the SLO Board of Supervisors indicates they are not in tune with their constituency. The next election could better reflect citizen desires with a few questions. Should vehicles be permitted on our beach? Should a marine sanctuary be established? Should park rangers lead nature walks to educate citizens? Should […]
Bill Denneen - Nipomo
Michelle in 2020!
Our first lady, Michelle Obama, would be ideal to replace President-elect Trump when his term is up in four years. Her great-great-grandfather was a black slave. We have come so very far since then.
Corporate war mongers belong in jail, not protesters
Compliments to the Sun for its opinion article by Gale McNeeley (“The Freedom to say ‘no,’” May 12), which discussed Dennis Apel receiving four months in jail for being against war. The leaders of the corporations that promote war are the ones that belong in jail in my opinion—not Dennis. Dennis inspired me to protest […]
You’ve been warned
Santa Maria had more teen pregnancies than any city in America when I moved here in 1960. I taught contraception in my biology classes at high school and Hancock College. I started Planned Parenthood, which was very small and controversial at first. Now it’s is a very busy place with about 25 excellent employees. I […]
Parade of protest against train activity
I live in Nipomo, which is downwind of the Phillips 66 Refinery (P66). This industry wants to increase its activity, which would result in even more air pollution for Nipomo. With increased train activity, the chance of another train-burning disaster becomes overwhelming. The citizens of Pittsburg, Calif., joined together to prevent these problems from happening in their community. They […]
PG&E should pay
Panels on my roof make more electricity than I use. As more roofs get photovoltaics, Diablo will no longer be needed. PG&E should pay for terminating their mistake—not us citizens.
From bad to worse
I was arrested at the entrance to Diablo in 1978 because they did not know what they were going to do with their nuclear waste that lasts for 10,000 years. Here we are 35-plus years later, and this deadly waste is being stored on site. At 90 I am too old to move or get […]
No sainthood for Serra
The Chumash were the only culture in this area for more than 6,000 years. The European invasion about 300 years ago changed this. An agent of the Spanish Inquisition, Junipero Serra enslaved the Chumash and forced them to build his churches, roads, and government buildings. Serra should not receive sainthood but have a yearly fire […]
Do we really need this devil?
Compliments to Mothers for Peace for getting a report about tsunami hazards at Diablo published—after 11 years of “cover up” (“The Nuclear Regulatory Commission releases a tsunami assessment of Diablo Canyon 11 years later,” Nov. 27). The events at Fukushima could happen at Diablo. I was arrested at the main gate to this plant in […]
Don’t bless us in public
I am not a Christian. My “god’ is Mother Nature. I am intimidated, offended, disenfranchised by Christian blessings. Our country was founded on freedom from religion. I suggest no blessings before meetings (“Pay to pray?” Nov. 7). Honoring Mother Nature would be acceptable to me.
