The Santa Maria Swim Club, one of the top 200 swimming clubs in the country, announced on Nov. 21 that three of its members have signed National Letters of Intent to swim for major collegiate programs.

Nipomo resident Sonny Fierro, 18, signed with the swimming program at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He previously trained at the famous Arden Hills Swim Club in Sacramento, home to Olympian Mark Spitz. Fierro is a USA Junior National qualifier and is training to make the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle.

Michaela Paige, 17, signed with Cal-State Bakersfield. Paige lives in Lompoc, and has been a member of the SMSC for two years. Her specialties are the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly; she is also a USA Junior National qualifier.

Josh Prenot, 18, is taking his skills to national champion University of California Berkeley. Prenot, profiled in this week’s issue of the Sun, is a resident of Orcutt, and began swimming for SMSC at the age of 8. He has qualified for USA Swimming National teams and most recently represented the USA at the Junior World Games in Russia.
