A half-boy, half-bat creature is the star of the latest community theater production in Santa Maria. Bat Boy: The Musical hits the Santa Maria Civic Theatre stage on Oct. 9.

The cult classic follows Bat Boy, who was found in a cave and taken in by a family in small-town West Virginia.

“As he struggles to find acceptance and his place in the world, long-buried secrets come to light, forcing the town to confront its fears, prejudices, and humanity,” according to the theater’s website.

Santa Maria’s rendition features Jaime Espinoza as Bat Boy and Lynda Mondragon (pictured rehearsing for Urinetown in April 2026) as the maternal Meredith Parker. Making his directorial debut at Santa Maria Civic Theatre, Justin Crabtree told the Sun he chose the production because it’s funny, strange, and surprisingly heartfelt.

“Beneath its outrageous premise is a story about acceptance, belonging, prejudice, and what it means to be seen for who you truly are,” Crabtree said via text. “I love that the show refuses to fit neatly into one box. It can make you laugh one moment and break your heart the next.”

Running through Oct. 25, the show plays three times a week at 1660 N. McClelland St. Curtains open at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays. The musical is recommended for ages 14 and older.
