Solvang native Esther Jacobsen Bates has spent 30 years dedicated to supporting arts education and cultural organizations in Santa Barbara County. For her dedication, she received the county’s Leadership in the Arts Award at the Oct. 6 Board of Supervisors meeting.
“Over time, I discovered that my strength was not making art but helping others experience, learn from, and benefit from arts and culture,” the honoree said at the meeting. “It’s been a tremendously rewarding path, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing what the arts can do—bring people together, open doors, build confidence, spark curiosity, and help us learn more about ourselves.”
Bates delivered art programs to schools in Los Alamos and the Santa Ynez Valley through Arts Outreach, a Los Olivos nonprofit. She was the executive director of the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art from 2003 to 2023. Recently, the philanthropist joined the board of Solvang Cinema Arts.
After the resolution at the board meeting, 3rd District Supervisor Joan Hartmann said the award winner is a “living national treasure.”
“You’re so deeply embedded in the community, and you’re one of those connectors that bring people in different nodes together,” Hartmann said. “It’s been extraordinary to see your career, and thank you so much for all you’ve done for our community.”
