The Central Coast Music Teachers Association held its 21st annual Piano Auditions recently with 23 of 44 participating students receiving the highest rating of 5. All three of the ensemble teams that participated received the ā€œ5ā€ rating, which qualifies these students to play at the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) Northern Festival at Peace Lutheran Church in Danville on Jan. 22, or at the CAPMT Southern Festival at Whittier College in Whittier on Feb. 5.Ā 

Students participating in the solo auditions performed two pieces from memory, as well as one duet piece. Those on the ensemble teams performed one piece each. The eight teachers who entered students were: Alan Boehmer of Los Osos, Louise Frye of Nipomo, Betty Hansen of Santa Maria, Belva Hanson of Santa Maria, Nell Kauffman of Arroyo Grande,
Debbie Lagomarsino of Paso Robles, Morgan Nelson of Arroyo Grande, and Mary Stornetta of Arroyo Grande. The adjudicator for the event was Susan Fee
of San Diego.

The Bartok and Honors Audition students also performed their piano pieces. Two students, Kevin Park and Ethan Silver, participated in the Bartok Auditions. They were each required to play one composition by Bela Bartok, as well as an additional piece by another 20th century composer. Both students qualified to compete at the CAPMT State Convention on Feb. 5 at Whitier College in Whitier. The six students participating in the Honors Auditions performed three pieces from contrasting musical periods. The winner for Category B was Jessica Wong with alternate Isabella Oldenburg also chosen, Category C winner was Jack Raventos, Category E winner was Evan Lih, and Category F had Frank Wyer receiving an honorable mention. Participating teachers for the Bartok and Honors Auditions were: Alan Boehmer of Los Osos, Lynne Garrett of Santa Maria, Nell Kauffman of Arroyo Grande, and Lynn Nakamura of Northridge. The adjudicators for the Bartok and Honors Auditions were George and Susan Fee from San Diego.

The Central Coast Music Teachers Association (CCMTA) is a local chapter of District VI that includes the counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. It is affiliated with the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).
