PCPA Theaterfest presents a special one-show event called Community Speaks: The Other Side of Broadway, which will turn the spotlight toward immigration reform and enforcement in Santa Maria.

Community Speaks is a grassroots theater project that allows conservatory acting students to read and convey locals’ voices. Scenes have been constructed from interviews conducted with members of the community.
ā€œThe purpose is to focus on a specific issue in our local society,ā€ Community Speaks director Karin Hendricks said in a statement released by PCPA. ā€œThe initial goal this semester was to look at migrant workers, but soon mushroomed with the sudden reactions to the proposed relocation of the ICE facility.ā€

The performance will include several individual pieces strung together to create a stream of monologues, song, and poetry. Conservatory acting students will present a snapshot of the community’s perspective on economy, real estate, and crime.

The production is March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Severson Theatre, 800 S. College Drive, Santa Maria. Tickets are free on a first-come, first-served basis. More information is available at pcpa.org.
