The Orcutt Community Theater’s latest production is The Elephant Man, which runs through March 10.
The show, written by Bernard Pomerance, tells the story of John Merrick, a man with a physical deformity who lived during the 19th century in London. Merrick had several rare skin and bone diseases and eventually became part of a series of traveling sideshows. The play chronicles Merrick’s work with physician Frederick Treves, who cared for him for many years. Merrick eventually became a favored member of London society, owing to his wit and personality, but ultimately he’s unable to find what he truly wants in life.Â
The play won a Tony Award for Best Play in 1979, and revivals have historically featured a number of famous stars tackling the challenging lead role, including Bradley Stewart, David Bowie, and Mark Hamill. In this production, Brian Kasicki takes on Merrick’s role, with Jerry Beatty playing Dr. Treves, Nitana De Hato Rey as Mrs. Kendall, and Dixie Arthur, David Campbell, Kate Sutterfield, and Dan Bullard in other roles. Alan Sutterfield is directing the OCT’s adaptation.
