• Showbox—The New Generation: Professional boxing returns to Chumash Casino on July 20, when undefeated lightweight Art Hovhannisyan faces off against Venezuelan Miguel Acosta in a 10-round main event. The night’s nationally televised card will also feature a co-main event between light middleweights Julian “J-Rock” Williams and Nevada’s Said El Harrak. The rest of the undercard includes Santa Maria’s Rufino Serrano, who will fight for the first-ever Central Coast Title against Seattle’s Rob Diezel. Other local fighters are slated to meet opponents to be announced. • Santa Maria Youth Football League: The league is taking registrations for the 2012 football and cheerleading seasons. Football fees are $200, including a jersey, gear rental, a trophy, and a basic picture package. Players must be between the ages of 8 and 14 during the season to participate. Cheerleaders must be in kindergarten to eighth grade for the 2012-2013 school year. Fees are $180 and include uniform, cheer camp, and a basic picture package. Registrations will be held at the Westgate Community Room, 1300 Marsala Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21 to 22. Parents must provide two copies of the child’s birth certificate, a current report card, and a recent photo. • Soccer skills camp: Youth soccer camp run by Santa Ynez High girls’ soccer coach Rob Cantrell takes place at Santa Ynez High School. The first session, for children ages 6 to 14, will be held from July 23 to 27 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon. A second session runs Aug. 6 through 10. The cost is $85 and $75 for siblings; children signing up for both sessions will receive a $40 discount. For $65, children ages 4 to 5 can register for “Little Skill Builders” camp on the same dates from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Coaches and instructors at selected sessions include former Pirates players, and coaches from Cal Poly, Righetti High, and Allan Hancock College. • City summer camp: The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department’s Summer Day Camp is ongoing through Aug. 10. The program includes activities designed to encourage physical activity, creativity, self-confidence, cooperation, problem solving, and responsibility. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the camp moves to the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center at 600 S. McClelland St., where participants can enjoy swimming in the afternoon. The camp fee is $75 per weekly session. Breakfast and lunch are included. Registrations are being accepted at the Recreation and Parks Department’s administrative office, 615 S. • Joe White Memorial Dinner & Auction: One-of-a-kind sports memorabilia and other unique items will be up for bid to support Allan Hancock College athletics on Aug. 18. The event takes place at the Santa Maria Fairpark Pavilion, 937 S. Thornburg in Santa Maria. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a social hour and silent auction, followed by a dinner starting promptly at 7:07 p.m. The live auction follows. Admission is $40 per person, and tables for 10 are $500. Interested parties can also become a “Gold Table Sponsor” for a donation of $1,000.
