The Santa Maria Arts Council is preparing to give $10,000 in cash awards to emerging artists in music, drama, dance, and visual arts. Artists interested in entering the competition must first attend a workshop to obtain an application.

Workshops will be held at 6 p.m. at Allan Hancock College’s Lompoc campus in the LVC CafĆ©; at 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Allan Hancock College Santa Maria campus dance studio; and at 10 a.m. March 3 at the Allan Hancock College Santa Maria campus Fine Arts room, Room F-11.

To be eligible, applicants must be 12 years old or older and have studied art in Northern Santa Barbara County for a minimum of two years. Competition is limited to students from Santa Ynez to Lompoc to Santa Maria, and Guadalupe to Cuyama.

Application deadline is Friday, March 23. Judging is Saturday, April 21. Winners must be available to present at the showcase on Monday, May 21.

Since 1972, the Santa Maria Arts Council has awarded more than $214,000 to 320 locally trained artists through its Individual Grants Competition.
