Most local schools are wrapping up for break, and that can only mean one thing: Summer camp is just around the corner.
The city of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department’s Summer Day Camp will be held this year at the Minami Community Center from June 18 to Aug. 10. The program is offered to children ages 6 to 12, providing a fun, educational environment to help youth achieve a positive self-image while enhancing their physical, mental, and social growth. Each week will include activities designed to encourage physical activity, creativity, self-confidence, cooperation, problem solving, and responsibility. During the eight weeks, participants will be featured in a talent show, “go for the gold” in a mini-Olympics, and have excursions to the county fair, a movie theater, the Natural History Museum, the Santa Maria Public Library, and Discovery Museum.
The camp will be held at the Minami Center, 600 West Enos Dr., on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the program will move to the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center/Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center at 600 S. McClelland St., where participants can enjoy swimming in the afternoon.
The camp fee is $75 per weekly session. Breakfast and lunch are included through a partnership with the Community Action Commission. Some scholarships are available.
