The Lompoc Valley Iris Society will hold a September sale of iris rhizomes (rootstock) on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot next to the Texas Cattle Company, 936 North H St., Lompoc.

This sale is different from the July sale. Normally, society members divide their iris beds in July and sell their surplus iris at that time, as was done this year. Some of the members, however, were unable to dig at that time, and the society has also been given rhizomes by a hybridizer who’s downsizing her commercial garden.

So if you missed the July sale or just want more irises, this second sale offers a whole new assortment of rhizomes. Many of the varieties on sale have been on display at the April iris shows, but many will be new to the Lompoc area. There will be photographs of most varieties, as well as other reference materials to help you make your selections.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to support a scholarship for local students and to purchase next year’s new varieties to be grown by members.

The Lompoc Valley Iris Society is an affiliate of the American Iris Society, region 15. For more information, call President Ben Schleuning at 733-4081.
