On Aug. 26, the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum will host Day at the Ranch, a free event for children to commemorate the memory of museum benefactor R.H. Tesene.Ā

The event features opportunities for children to learn how to rope cattle, make their own custom brands, and participate in ranching-themed games. The day will also include a visit from Little Bear–a miniature horse–and Oberon the gypsy horse from Los Flores Ranch Park.Ā

“R.H. Tesene Day is a fun, unique way for kids to have a hands-on ranching experience,” Program Director Amy Blasco stated in a press release. “This annual event is always a pleasure to host because not only do we get to provide a free day to the community, but we also get to pay homage to the wonderful history of ranching, our valley, and our museum.”

Tesene’s donations enabled the museum to move into a new facility 13 years ago. A BBQ Hall of Fame in his memory is also featured in the museum. Day at the Ranch runs from noon to 4 p.m. The museum is located at 705 S. McClelland St., Santa Maria. For more information, visit smvdiscoverymuseum.org or call (805) 928-8414.
