Allan Hancock College men’s basketball head coach Tyson Aye said that it was “perfect timing” for Devin Davis to be the Sun’s Athlete of the Week. The team had just come back from a win at an all-tournament game on Jan. 7, and Davis definitely delivered against Pasadena City College (game pictured).

Davis, a sophomore at Hancock, managed to help the Bulldogs win at the Cuesta College Winter Classic with the second most scores during and the game and by earning a double-double. He also scored a double-double during the game the day before against LA Harbor.

Davis, who stands 6 feet 3 inches and plays guard for Hancock, grew up in the Bay Area city of Vallejo. He graduated from El Cerrito High School in 2015, then eventually transferred to Hancock from the Colorado Northwestern College.

Davis spoke with the Sun on Jan. 10, during the Bulldogs’ bus ride on their way to play a game against Santa Monica, which they won 89-79. While coach Aye expressed enthusiasm for Davis’ performance, the sophomore who wears No. 3 also has the strong support of his family.

“Oh yeah, they come out to all the home games,” Davis said.

Hancock’s men’s basketball has two games a week, and the team practices every day. But even after all that, Davis isn’t done.

“After practice I come out at night and go to the Hancock gym,” he said.

Davis recorded his third double-double game of the season by contributing 17 points, 12 rebounds—including pulling down five offensive rebounds—and three assists in that Harbor-Bulldog game alone. With a major in business, Davis hopes to transfer to the university of his choice on a scholarship.

Hancock trailed Ventura by 10 points on Jan. 13 at the Western State Conference opener, but Davis managed 12 of the Bulldog’s 67 points. He was 4-for-9 for overall shooting in that game.
