The action in the play takes place during the evening of Oct. 30, 1938, at Mockās General Store, a combination grocery store and post office in Shallowford, N.C., a small farming town 15 miles west of Winston-Salem. Mercury Theatreās radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds sends panic into the minds of the storeās patrons. Convinced itās actually taking place and threatening their very existence, they prepare to meet the enemy head on. The comedy that ensues is hilarious until a cooler head prevails.
