Up-and-coming taekwondo stars Bruce and Henry Newby are taking over the local martial arts scene.

For these boys, taekwondo is more than just a sport–it’s a family affair. Their father, Cort Newby, has been practicing taekwondo since the ’90s, and the brothers train tirelessly with him at their family-owned gym, Santa Maria Taekwondo Academy.

The hard work is paying off.

At the 35th Tae Ryong Cup Taekwondo Championships in Oxnard on Aug. 4, Cort said Henry, 11, took first in his class. Bruce, 6, fought his heart out and placed second.

“We’re really proud of them,” Cort told the Sun, adding that the family’s ultimate goal is to get both boys to the Olympics. It won’t be easy, but Cort said his kids have the talent and passion to make names for themselves in taekwondo.
