On Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Lakeview Junior High seventh grade boys’ basketball team beat Orcutt 58-34 to win the championship and finish the season with an impressive 15-0 record. Players include Kalin Corrai, Jalen Atkinson (little brother to this week’s Athlete of the Week), Zach Trevino, Zachary Morris, Kobe Holford, Dominic Partida, Austin Olsen, Ian Tetley, Izik Carbojal, Michael Ramirez, Jelani Henderson, and coaches Simon Griffin and Aaron Olsen.
Girl power
The Parks and Recreation Department of Santa Maria recently announced that the Police Activities League is bringing back its program geared toward teenage girls, ages 12 to 17. The Girls’ Circle program is a part of the One Circle Foundation and adopts the model of a structured support group and integrated relational theory. The program gives girls a chance to share their experiences and aims to increase their skills, personal/collective strengths, and competence.
This winter’s Girls’ Circle will focus on issues with body image and is scheduled to start Jan. 9. The group will meet for eight weeks every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center. The class is free, but registration is required. Call 925-0951, Ext. 252.
Winter camp
Ideal for working parents, the Winter Day Camp presented by the Santa Maria Parks and Recreation Department serves children grades first through sixth. It runs from Dec. 17 to Jan. 11; dates coincide with winter breaks for the Santa Maria Bonita and Orcutt school districts. From 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., kids can enjoy an array of fun enrichment activities at the Minami Community Center; cost is $75 per week.
