We are in a recession with a large number of unemployed. I have a suggestion that might help in alleviating that problem. I have traveled to Oregon through the years and am impressed at the fact that when stopping for gas, not only do the employees pump the gas, but theyāre often willing to clean windshields and check oil upon request. This service, pumping gas, is the law in Oregon, and I would propose it be adopted on a national basis. Oregon has put thousands of people to work, many of whom are unqualified for anything else.
In addition to creating jobs, it also solves social problems. A person who might turn to stealing or drugs would have a way to make money instead. It doesnāt have to be hard on the station owner; there should be tax advantages and minimum wages. I would hope that Oregon would advise.
I noticed in Oregon that many customers tip and appreciate not having to expose themselves to the filth that comes from handling the gas nozzles.
I will try to pass this idea on to our political representatives, but most are so interested in spending our tax money on pet projects, I donāt hold out much hope.
