On Aug. 18, law enforcement officials were on foot in pursuit of a burglary suspect through our neighborhood. The suspect broke through our backyard gate as a means of escape since our home borders farmland. During the pursuit, the gate was left open and two of my three dogs (all rescues), escaped through the open gate. If not for a phone call from our nextdoor neighbor, we might never have known about this happening.

As a result, our beagle, Klaus, and our deer Chihuahua, Libby, were on their own, which has never ever happened to them. We began a search street to street looking for them all evening, and all day the following two days, posting flyers all over town and following up on every lead that we received. By Sunday, we were heartbroken to think that we might never get our dogs back.

Fortunately, through the benefit of social media (Facebook, etc.), everyone in Guadalupe was “looking” for our dogs, and early Sunday morning, Libby had been found. We recovered her safe and sound, but frightened. We continued on foot in the area she was found to look for Klaus into the late afternoon and suspended searching because of darkness, but got a call that evening that he had also been found but was injured. He was recovered and hospitalized as he had suffered a bite wound that needed treatment.

On behalf of my wife and myself, we want to thank our friends, our clients, and the residents of the city of Guadalupe for their understanding, compassion, and care for our two dogs, for without their help, our dogs might never have been found. We are comforted in knowing that compassion exists in Guadalupe.
