As connected to the local arts scene as I have been for the last 30 years—working with musicians, dancers, singer-songwriters, painters, sculptors, and actors, having worked in radio, for the theater, and as the arts editor for the Sun—I should be one of the last people surprised by the depth and strength of the local talent among us.

But much to my surprise, and delight, I was blown away when I was honored to sit as one of five judges for the Rotary Club’s ā€œSanta Maria Has Talent.ā€ As you notice in the title—it is not an idle boast—Santa Maria ā€œdoesā€ have talent. The dancers, singers, and musicians—from 6 to 60—were more than worthy of standing in the spotlight on the big stage, and deserving of the applause and awards.

I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the 50 contestants who were willing to put it on the line and show off their amazing talent. Also, here’s a hearty congratulations to Rotary for putting on a very well-produced showcase. This event was great for the community and made me proud to see the tremendous support for the arts.
