The Sun scored silver at the California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers Contest banquet on May 2. The second-place winners include:

• Managing Editor Amy Asman, best enterprising reporting, “Start by believing,” a cover story on sexual assault survivor Delaney Henderson.

• Staff Writer Kristina Sewell, best sports story, “Legends of the Deep,” a cover story profile on deep-sea diver Sam Miller.

• Former Assistant Art Director Heather Walter, best graphic illustration, for a wine supply graphic.

• Cartoonist Ross Mayfield, best editorial cartoon, for his lampoon of Gov. Jerry Brown’s “high-speed” rail.

Asman attended the event with former Sun staff writer Jeremy Thomas, who now works as a staff reporter for the Contra Costa Times.

“I miss the old office and I’m very proud of my former colleagues,” Thomas said. “Santa Maria is fortunate to have such stellar journalism right in their backyard.”
