Local residents in the midst of searching for a job—you’re in luck. On Oct. 8, Allan Hancock College will host its annual Career Exploration Day on the Santa Maria Campus.

“Today’s economic uncertainty underscores the need for reliable, stable, and sustaining employment,” Hancock representatives wrote in a recent press release. “Some of the best jobs today did not even exist 10, five, or even one year ago. And many of these new opportunities require some college, but very often, a two-year degree or less.”

The event is open to Hancock students, as well as other members of the community, and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the commons area. Throughout the day, jobseekers will be matched with future employers or educators who can help prepare them for their new careers. Some featured vocations include nursing, firefighting, electronics, dental assisting, and machinery.

“We are seeing nurses receiving signing bonuses on top of their lucrative salaries; automotive technicians continue to be in demand; and dental assistants are snapped up after completing the nine-month program,” Anne Cremarosa, academic dean, said in the press release.

Representatives from more than 50 companies, including employers from manufacturing, agriculture, law enforcement, and the medical fields, will be on hand discuss their industries with students and members of the public. Also present will be representatives from the college’s various academic and career technical education departments, such as welding, public safety, nursing, business, culinary arts, and more.

While at the event, people can go on tours of some of the college’s labs, including the culinary arts teaching kitchen, the high tech auto lab, and the new science labs. Attendees can also enter a drawing to win free spring 2011 tuition.

Employers interested in showcasing their industry at Career Exploration Day can contact Lynn Mayer in the college’s Career and Technical Education Center at 922-6966, Ext. 3374, or lmayer@hancockcollege.edu.
