The Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County will be honoring people who’ve given outstanding service to the community at its fourth annual Champions dinner.
The commission is a private, nonprofit social service agency committed to helping low-income residents achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. It currently serves about 10,000 members whose needs outweigh their ability to live independently.
The commission is an umbrella for many organizations and programs, such as the Independent Living Program for foster youth, mentoring, Head Start programs, job placement, teen pregnancy prevention, and educational resources. It focuses on helping the community in any way possible and especially focuses on youth.
The Champions award dinner serves as the commission’s biggest fundraising event. This year’s proceeds will go toward the agency’s Senior Nutrition Program, which serves nearly 100,000 meals each year to more than 7,500 low-income seniors. That includes meals delivered to housebound seniors. The need is now greater than ever.
Celebrity chef Bradley Ogden will prepare the evening’s meal for commission members and event attendees.
The honorees are Flo Furuike, Anne and Michael Towbes, city of Guadalupe Mayor Lupe Alvarez and Councilmember Ariston Julian, and Marian Medical Center’s CEO Charles Cova and Sister Janet Corcoran.
The dinner will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 23 at Hotel Corque. Tickets cost $100 each or $750 for a table of eight.
