If you or your family earned less than $49,000 last year and you’re puzzled by the tax law, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program can help with free tax preparation beginning Jan. 30.

Sponsored by Northern Santa Barbara County United Way, VITA assists low- to moderate-income families and individuals in claiming special credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child/Dependent Tax Credit.

Free tax preparation will be offered by appointment only. Families and individuals who visit a Volunteer Tax site should bring photo I.D., Social Security cards, birth dates, and W-2 or 1099 forms. Where applicable, rental information, childcare, and child support documentation, tuition and student loan statements, medical bills, and proof of charitable contributions may be required.

To make an appointment with VITA, call 211 or visit uwcentralcoast.org.
