In honor of local veterans, fallen and living, the Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association and several local veterans groups are planning to stand a 60-foot flagpole and memorial plaque at the entrance to the Old Town area.

The association, along with area members of the Boy Scouts of America, will hold a fundraising event on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and Nov. 13 in the Santa Maria Costco parking lot to collect money for the project. The cost of the memorial is estimated at $20,000, and to date the association has raised a little more than $10,000.

ā€œNo matter where you live along the Central Coast, your political persuasion, or your views concerning involvement in recent wars, it is now time for us all to pull together to honor our war veterans from all of our past conflicts,ā€ the association said in a release to the media.

The flagpole will be centered on a five-pointed star; each point will represent each branch of the U.S. military. The star will be joined with five granite columns, each displaying circular seals of the armed forces. From the top of each column, a light will illuminate the American flag at the top of the flagpole.

The Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association is a nonprofit group dedicated to the restoration of the Old Town Orcutt commercial district. The association has been host to multiple events benefiting Old Town, including construction of the Old Town Orcutt clock.
