Vandenberg Air Force Base engineers are planning to conduct two separate controlled burns on land near the base in Lompoc from now until Nov. 13, base officials recently announced.

Ā

The burns will take place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in two different locations. The Grant Burn includes more than 300 acres north of San Antonio Road West and east of Marshallia Ranch Golf course. The Airfield Burn consists of 395 acres northwest of the base’s airfield runway.Ā

Ā

The burns will give Vandenberg engineers data for managing the impact of local and regional air quality during a burn. The burns will also help eliminate invasive plant species—such as pampas grass and other vegetation—from the airfield and therefore help maintain the required 1,000-foot centerline clearance.
