UnitedAg, a member-owned agricultural trade association, awarded more than $100,000 to students in California and Arizona, including more than $7,000 to students in Santa Barbara and SLO counties. The students submitted essays in response to the following prompt: “Explain where and how California gets its water. If you were governor, how would you manage this valuable resource to protect agriculture?”

Several local students received scholarships of $1,000, including Christian Cedra from Santa Maria, Christopher Curiel from Santa Maria, Casey Muth from Nipomo, Anna Piester from Nipomo, and Alyssa Jordan from Santa Maria. Ryan Teixeira from Pismo Beach received a $500 scholarship. UnitedAg awarded the largest local scholarship of $2,000 to Maria Garcia from Santa Maria.

UnitedAg CEO Kirti Mutatkar will attend an event celebrating the local award winners, June 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Far Western Tavern in Orcutt, and hand the winners their checks, he said in statement released by UnitedAg.

“I am very proud of the UnitedAg scholarship program,” he said. “It provides financial assistance to students who might not have the opportunity to go to college otherwise. I am grateful that we have generous members who support our scholarship foundation, the Agribusiness Education Foundation.”
