Longtime Santa Maria Joint Union High School District Board of Education member Victor Tognazzini will be retiring from his position on the board Dec. 31.Ā 

Tognazzini, who was elected in 2004, plans to move to Wyoming to spend more time with his wife and his family.Ā

Tognazzini said he is grateful to the voters who elected and re-elected him to the position, calling it an honor to serve.Ā 

ā€œMy service on this board has been one of the highlights of my life,ā€ Tognazzini said. ā€œThere is great satisfaction in being a part of a governance team that ensures our community’s students have the best possible learning environment. I am proud to have been part of the stewardship of this board and all who have served and now serve.ā€

Mark Richardson described Tognazzini as a champion of public education. ā€œHis devotion to young people, our staff, and the community is unmatched,ā€ Richardson said.Ā 

Tognazzini’s term was set to expire in December of 2016. The board will have 60 days to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. The board can opt to appoint a candidate, conduct interviews, or hold a special election.
