On Jan. 9, the Santa Maria Valley Charter School will hold its first informational meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Santa Maria Sewing Superstore, 127 E. Main St., in Santa Maria.

School officials recently sent a copy of their charter petition to the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. A decision has yet to be made, but the school is proposing to open in August 2010, according to a press release.

Santa Maria Valley Charter will cater to children in kindergarten through third grade, in classes of 25 students per credentialed teacher. The curriculum will also include a foreign language component, starting with Spanish and branching out to include other languages.

In a letter to the Sun, founding member Ludie Willis said the school plans to begin with 300 students—with three classes for each grade—and then increase one grade level per a year until it reaches its capacity of 525 students. If more students apply in the first year than the school has room for, it will use a random lottery system for admission.
