On a surface level, nail-trimming is what Orcutt resident Tara Hoffmann—with a 31-year career in mobile foot care services for seniors and individuals with limited mobility—gets paid to do on a daily basis.
For her, the reward of offering pedicures and other foot-based treatments in the comfort of a client’s home is knowing that her work can help reduce discomfort and improve mobility, while also preserving their dignity—especially for bedridden clients whose long, thick nails haven’t been trimmed in a while.
While clients bare their feet to Hoffmann, some bare their hearts as well, the local pedicurist explained.
“I had this client, she’s been gone for a long time now, but she had … stage 4 stomach cancer, six months to live,” Hoffmann said. “I went over there to cut her nails, and her whole family was there. I was trying to have a conversation with her, but they were answering all the questions for her. So, I finally asked her, ‘Would you like to have a private conversation?’ And she said, yes, … because she just wanted to talk about her impending death.”
When Hoffmann first enrolled in nail tech courses through a beauty college more than three decades ago, she remembered a lot of her peers seemed uncomfortable with nail-trimming and pedicures for older folks with unkempt nails.
“It didn’t bother me because I took care of my grandmother’s feet for years, and one of my neighbors across the street who was incapacitated and diabetic, I took care of her feet too,” Hoffmann recalled. “[In school], they would send me senior citizens with really gnarly nails sometimes, … and one of them told me that she wished the doctor still came to the house.”
That comment sparked Hoffmann’s epiphany, she said, to work toward operating a mobile foot care business to treat seniors in their homes.
“I’ve been in business ever since,” Hoffmann said.
While her home base is in Orcutt, Hoffmann and her associate, Chelsie Yanez, serve clients throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Hoffmann worked solo until 2025 when she decided to hire Yanez.

Aside from visiting private residences, the duo also frequents senior group home facilities where multiple residents get pedicures. Some local destinations include Santa Maria Terrace and Merrill Gardens.
Some of her preset packages include the “no frills” mini pedicure, which entails trimming, filing, and thinning thick nails; a spa pedicure, to soak and scrub, smooth calluses, and massage the feet; and an option to add a manicure. Mileage charges factor into home visits, while senior residential facilities are eligible for special group rate offers.
“Many of our clients are in different stages of dementia, bed- or wheelchair-confined due to health conditions, developmentally/physically disabled, … and are difficult to transport,” Hoffmann said. “If clients can go to a salon, podiatrist, we encourage that.”
Santa Maria-based podiatrist Peter C. Fillerup said in a statement that he’s referred many of his clients to Hoffmann—a licensed and insured geriatric pedicurist since 1995—for her foot care services.
“I have known Tara for many years. … Our patients have been very pleased with her treatment,” Fillerup stated in a brochure for Hoffmann’s business. “I have the utmost confidence in her and the service she provides, … in a compassionate and caring way.”
