The Sun took home nine awards, including three first place prizes, from the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s (CNPA) Better Newspapers Contest on May 20.
Winning titles for the Sun went to Staff Writer David Minsky’s photo of Javier Gaona, which placed first in the News Photo category; “Out of the shadows” by Managing Editor Joe Payne, whose piece won in the Enterprise News Story or Series category; and Staff Writer Brenna Swanston’s “The new workforce,” which earned first in the Agricultural Reporting category.
The Sun also placed second for General Excellence, and Payne earned second place in the Non-Profile Feature Story category for his piece “Reclaiming a community.”
Minsky garnered honorable mentions in the Environmental Reporting: Drought/Fire and Investigative Reporting categories with “Thirsty for solutions” and “Truth or lives,” respectively. Swanston earned honorable mentions for “The locals who stood at Standing Rock” and “The bully effect” in the Profile Feature Story and Coverage of Education categories, respectively.
The Sun’s sister paper, New Times, was also recognized at the CNPA contest, taking home one second place award and three honorable mentions.
