Local high school students got some words of wisdom from business leaders earlier this month at the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s “Take a Future Business Leader to Lunch” event at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center.

More than 60 students talked to the professional mentors about their future career goals.

The district’s assistant superintendent of business services, Yolanda Ortiz, who’s also a graduate of Santa Maria High School, gave the keynote speech.

According to district officials, the students and mentors will continue to discuss American business and perform community projects throughout the year.

“It was really interesting because it gave all of us an opportunity to interact and learn more about the businesses right here in Santa Maria, what they need and have to offer,” Delta High School senior Maria Salinas said in a press release. She was matched with a business partner from a Central Coast winery.
