St. Joseph High School students handcrafted 134 bowls to donate to the 12th annual Santa Maria Empty Bowls event held on Oct. 23.

The students worked after school to create something special to contribute to the local community. Their bowls were purchased during the empty bowls event, filled with soup, and taken home to serve as a reminder to care for and feed the hungry in valley neighborhoods.

Each bowl created raised $20 in direct sales for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, and that $20 can be turned into $400 worth of food dollars, according to a press release sent out by the high school.

ā€œOur students are excited to be a part of the worthwhile effort,ā€ art department chair and ceramics instructor Candy Vosburg said in the press release. ā€œThey love being able to create something beautiful and useful with their hands and knowing that what they have made will be used to help the community.ā€

For the Foodbank, the empty bowls event serves as a way to bring awareness to hunger issues in the county as well as provide a tangible way to help tackle those problems. The press release sent out by St. Joe’s said each bowl sold reaps enough food to feed a family of four for one week.
