Word wizards will have their time to shine at the Central Coast Literacy Council’s annual Spelling Bee and Silent Auction on Sept. 18 at Shepard Hall in the Santa Maria Public Library,
421 S. McClelland St.
Sponsored teams will compete in the contest, which starts at 1 p.m. and continues until there’s only one team of top spellers left. According to the Central Coast Literacy Council, there’s no admittance charge for the event, but seating is limited.
The silent auction will run from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. and will feature an Ibanez electric guitar from the collection of recently retired head librarian Jack Buchanan, a set of sterling silver flatware donated by a CCLC tutor, artwork in various media, passes to the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, gift baskets from Friends of the Library, and more.
Funds raised at the event support the Literacy Council’s Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language, and Family Literacy programs in Northern Santa Barbara County.
