The American Association of University Women-Santa Maria Branch (AAUW-SM) awarded seven local seventh-grade girls full scholarships to attend Tech Trek at UC Santa Barbara.

Tech Trek, a weeklong science and math camp, is designed to help young women entering eighth grade in the fall. The camp offers hands-on activities in math, science, and related fields.

This year’s winners come from El Camino and Fesler junior high schools. Julisa Sedano, Jasmin Herrera Ramos, Jessica Rodriguez, Brynley Ellsworth, Elizabeth Pantoja, Hayley Rodriguez, and Ximena Rojas were awarded the scholarship after being nominated by their math and science teachers and approved by the AAUW-SW committee.

The AAUW-SM looks to the underserved population of the local community, giving special attention to young women who would be the first in their family to attend college. With a one-week long experience at a university, the association hopes to increase the students’ drive to attend college, according to a press release.

More information about the association and Tech Trek is available at 266-7790.
