For boys and girls dreaming of putting on a firefighter’s helmet and getting up close and personal with a fire truck, the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is offering a Junior Firefighter’s Camp July 13 to 17 at Fire Station No. 2, 416 W. Carmen Lane, in Santa Maria.

The hands-on four-day camp is structured like a real fire academy, designed to teach children ages 8 to 12 about a firefighting career. Camp attendees will have access to firefighting tools, including attack and supply hoses, ropes, and ladders. They will also learn skills for making rescues, basic EMT procedures, and patient care.

The camp costs $27 for Santa Maria residents and $33.50 for non-city residents. The fee includes a T-shirt, snacks, and barbecue hosted by the Santa Maria Fire Department.

Parents can register their children at the Recreation and Parks Department, 615 S. McClelland St. The class is limited to the first 30 registrants.

For more information, call the Recreation and Parks Department at 925-0951, Ext. 260.
