The city of Santa Maria announced the appointment of Larry Appel as its new director of community development beginning June 8.

Appel replaces Kirk Lindsay, who retired in December 2008 after seven years.Ā  He has served for the last two years as deputy director of planning services with El Dorado County Development Services Department. Appel spent more than 25 years with the county of Santa Barbara, where he left as a senior planner.

ā€œI’m very excited to be returning to Santa Maria to lead the Community Development Department,ā€ Appel said in a press release.Ā  ā€œHaving been a city resident for over 23 years, we’ve had the opportunity to watch the city grow. I hope to use my many years of planning experience to oversee the planned growth of our All-America city.ā€

Appel will oversee the preparation of planning studies and serve as the zoning administrator.
