Elementary and middle school students from around Santa Maria Valley will challenge each other in reading, math, and spelling skills at multiple competitions later this month.
The Junior High Battle of the Books will come first, gathering more than 75 students on Friday, April 7, at 10 a.m. to show off their reading skills. Students from six schools will be asked about plots, characters, and themes from more than 30 books, with the two highest-scoring teams showing down at a final “battle” at 12:30 p.m.
The Battle of the Books will feature a superhero theme, and it’s scheduled to take place at the Santa Maria-Bonita School District (SMBSD) administrative offices.
Next up is the Elementary Math Super Bowl, where fourth through sixth graders from SMBSD elementary schools will compete in individual grade level math tests, team grade level tests, and a team competition, also at the district offices. The contest will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Finally, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students from all over the Santa Maria Valley will compete at the Masonic Lodge Spelling Bee from April 10 through 12 at 7 p.m. each night. Nearly 100 students are expected to participate.
