Santa Maria High School’s ballet folklorico team will rain down dances infused with culture and history for Sanchez Elementary School students on Feb 6.
At 9 and 10 a.m. at the Ethel Pope Auditorium, nearly 30 students will take the stage for the community outreach.
Most of the dances, music, and costumes will be from the area of Tamaulipas, a state in Mexico, referred to as the Huasteca Region.
Santa Maria High ballet folklorico teacher Angel M. Hoyos said in a press release that the performances are a proven way for students to learn about culture through dance that tells stories about places, people, and historical events.
“My students have worked hard to keep Mexican cultural traditions alive, many that are almost non existent today,” Hoyos said in the release. Anyone can go on You Tube and watch a video and ‘like’ a dance and learn it, but it is another thing to learn the way it should be taught for that particular region.”
