The community service project involved members of the Alpine Club spending several hours building and maintaining trails at Los Flores Ranch, a recreational space in the Solomon Hills. The area is a popular place for equestrians, cyclists, and hikers.

ā€œIt was a great opportunity for our kids to serve the community,ā€ Santa Maria High social science teacher Amy Hennings said in a press release.

The idea for the project began when club President Joaquin Vargas decided to look into what type of volunteer work the group could do. The timing was perfect as Hennings ran into the new School Community Liaison Patricia Lopez Barriga who had been sent a flier from the ranch asking for volunteers, according to the
press release.

In addition to Hennings, retired Santa Maria High teacher Cathy Murray and her husband, Tom, also chaperoned and helped.
