Santa Maria High School students recently joined millions of volunteers to work together to create a healthy environment and lifestyle during the school’s Red Ribbon Week.

The national campaign, YOLO (You Only Live Once) Be Drug Free ran Oct. 24 to 28. It kicked off during a lunch rally with the majority of more than 2,600 students signing a banner. Each day, students demonstrated a different theme including dress-up “Red Day” and “Pledge to Keep Hands Off Drugs.” Class competitions, contests, and prizes were part of the fun too.

Associated Student Body President Yailin Orozco said the Student Council looks forward to participating each year and that they all found the atmosphere exciting. Senior Maria Diaz agreed, adding in a press release, “I really enjoy the competitions between the classes, but this year I am hoping my math class wins the free lunch!”

Santa Maria High’s Activity Director Adrian Salazar said the idea of positive decision making really hit home with the students.

“School, learning, and making friends are cool; drugs are not,” Salazar said.

The events were put on by the Associated Student Body and Friday Night Live Club.
